About Karatu
Karatu is a lively agricultural town nestled in the fertile highlands between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, sitting at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level along the main road of the Northern Safari Circuit. Known informally as the Little Switzerland of Tanzania for its cool highland climate, lush coffee and banana plantations and green rolling hills, Karatu serves as a convenient overnight stopover for guests travelling between Lake Manyara National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. The town centre offers essential traveller services including fuel stations, local restaurants, small supermarkets, pharmacies, currency exchange points and a growing selection of mid-range lodges and luxury farm retreats set among the surrounding Iraqw highland farms. Karatu is the heartland of the Iraqw people, one of Tanzania's most culturally distinct communities whose terraced farms, traditional homesteads and vibrant weekly market offer a genuine and unhurried glimpse into highland Tanzanian rural life that contrasts beautifully with the wild landscapes on either side of town.
