Kilimanjaro International Airport commonly abbreviated KIA is Tanzania's second busiest international airport and the primary gateway for the northern safari circuit and Mount Kilimanjaro trekking, located in the Sanya Plains midway between Arusha and Moshi at 46 kilometres from Arusha and 50 kilometres from Moshi town. The airport handles direct international flights from major hubs including Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Istanbul, connecting Tanzania's most visited safari region directly to Europe, the Middle East and the rest of Africa without requiring a connection through Dar es Salaam. Upon arrival at KIA, most guests are met by their Tour Guide or transfer driver for the one-hour road journey into Arusha Town, where northern circuit safaris begin or the one-hour drive to Moshi for Kilimanjaro trekking preparations. The airport has a single passenger terminal with currency exchange facilities, an ATM, a tourist information desk, car hire desks and a small selection of shops and restaurants.
